What is IRS Form 6166 (Certification of US Tax Residency)?
Form 6166 is the TRC for the United States, with the official IRS title being “Certification of US Tax Residency.” It is used by US residents to show foreign governments that they are eligible for tax treaty benefits.
TRCs are generally used by individuals to benefit from applying double tax treaties while complying with their local tax rulings. In essence, a TRC is proof of residency in a given country. Any country that is a part of a DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement) can issue one to a taxpayer.
